Types of bearings

Bearings carry rotating shafts and swinging joints with low friction. This category includes tapered roller bearings with separately sold bearing cones and cups, needle bearings, composite bearings and pivot parts such as boom cylinder and bucket linkage groups.

  • Tapered roller: carries both radial and axial loads, common in hubs and gearboxes
  • Needle: supports high radial loads in tight spaces
  • Composite: reduces lubrication demand in pivots

Selection and fitting tips

Besides bore, outside diameter and width, the bearing type matters. Search the number stamped on your bearing, or go by machine model and location with the Part finder. To query several bearings together, use Paste a parts list.

On a tapered bearing, the cone and cup should be replaced as a set. A clean housing, seating the bearing with a proper tool rather than by impact, and the correct preload setting all decide service life. Noise, overheating or play are the first signs of wear.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace the bearing cone and cup separately?

This is not recommended; a matched cone and cup should be renewed together, otherwise the new part wears fast on the old surface.

Why do bearings fail early?

Main causes are poor lubrication, dirt ingress, incorrect fitting and overloading.

How do I determine bearing size?

The stamped number is the most reliable; if it has worn off, measure bore, outside diameter and width and send them with the machine details.
